Fasten your seat belts

Happy Fourth of July! Actually I hate holidays of any kind. There's no mail. Also, there is little news. Of course nowadays with the MSM there is never any news. Unless you have been tricked into believing that Tom Cruise and Britanny (sp?) are news. And Michael Jackson and runaway bride-to-be's and shark bites and such things.

I notice that the Iraq "war" has virtually disappeared from our local paper. Nor did it report on the absolutely delightful put-down Senator Byrd did on Rumsfeld the Pompous. But, then, we have long ago given up hope for the major media. I hope they are aware that I am only one of many that no longer tunes in to anything other than Democracy Now.

It looks like we may be in for some genuine fun in coming weeks (if you believe that what is going on in our country might be considered fun). First, there is the Rove situation, already shaping up to be an endless argument over what "knowingly" means. Having first claimed that Rove did indeed talk to reporters but did not leak the name of Plame, they now seem to be shifting to the position that he did not knowingly do it (cute, huh?). They can probably argue this long enough for the American electorate to forget all about it - just like the Gannon/Guckert scandal.

There is now also the monumental problem of replacing Sandra Day O'Connor. The far right has decided to go all out and call in all their chips. They want Bush to nominate someone to the right of Jack-the-Ripper (what do women know about their bodies or lives or rights?). As this does not seem very consistent with what the majority of Americans believe about abortion rights it should prove to be (I would like to say amusing) a precursor to Civil War. What do you think God might communicate to Shrub about this?

Then there is the lingering Bolton problem. Cheney obviously does not want to lose this one, trying to demonstrate that he now has dictatorial powers. It is perfectly obvious to anyone with any brain at all that the Bolton nomination should be withdrawn, or that Bolton himself should withdraw, but that would mean having to admit defeat, a situation that Bush/Cheney are unable to contemplate as they, like Rumsfeld, know that they are absolutely right all the time.

Veterans for Peace have a stateament circulating calling for the impeachment of George W. Bush. This is a serious and well-conceived attempt that deserves to be supported. I urge you all to sign it. Even if it never happens (as it probably can't given the chicken-hearted, Republican dominated, corporate controlled, anti-democratic majority there) it is worth the effort. It might even someday save you from the guillotine.

Be of good cheer.
